Independence Power Systems

UL Field Services in Western U.S

At Independence Power Systems we provide UL field labeling services. We have partnered with all the major NRTL’s (Nationally Registered Test Laboratories) to provide UL field labeling services for equipment in the field. We do UL field labeling for many UL Standards, including the 508, and 508A industrial control panels, UL 891 for switchgear and for equipment and others.

UL Field Services in Western U.S

Equipment labeling requests usually come from a few sources. Typically, they originate from the city Building and Safety Inspectors. Sometimes they are a result of company or corporate policy, and other times it is needed by an insurance carrier. In some areas of the country the serving utility requires a new UL field label on existing switchgear when Photo Voltaic systems are connected ahead of the customer’s main OCP (over current protection). In all UL labeling situations, Independence Power Systems can provide these services.

When the need arises to have existing or newly purchased equipment labeled to the UL standard, we can provide the services. Our comprehensive services include both the UL evaluation of the equipment and the remediation of the issues found. Independence Power Systems will provide 2 quotes for you.

The 1st or “initial” quote will be for the cost of the UL evaluation services. Upon completion of the evaluation a well-organized report will be provided. The initial report will provide a full scope of the need to adjust any electrical system design or component adjustments. As well, during the evaluation we will look at the components and installation methods to make sure that the enclosures, components and equipment meet the standard needed for the environment they are being used in.

The 2nd will be to provide the scope of work to do the adjustments to the control panel or equipment. This remediation of the discrepancies found, will also come in a quote so you can see the breakdown of the work needed and each adjustment that was found.

Our Field Engineer/Estimator can estimate the costs for the UL evaluation step of your project. An initial application will need to be filled out. Once the application is received, it will be reviewed and any questions will need to be addressed with sufficient documentation and specifications. In the event that you have a correction notice or “Not Approved” from the local Building Department’s “AHJ”, (Authority having Jurisdiction, also called the inspector) We will need a copy of that document as part of the application process

Report Remediation

Step 2 of the project is the adjustments needed to bring the equipment electrical system up to UL standard. Our Field Engineer/Estimator can, at this time, provide you a quote for the remediation scope of work needed. Not all equipment needs adjustments. In the event there is some equipment that needs adjustment after the UL evaluation is done, the report will provide a list of the non-compliant components or wiring methods for each piece and will specify what adjustments are needed so the equipment can be brought up to the standard.

Most equipment can be adjusted to meet the standard. There are, however, some rare cases where the manufacturer used some components that do not meet any standard, and those components are so custom that it is not possible to locate other suitable components that could replace the non-labeled components. In this case, a re-design will need to be done, or the equipment will not be able to be labeled.

In many cases, Independence Power Systems technicians can provide the labor and expertise needed for all electrical system remediation in the report. We have the skill set and have done UL labeling remediation for 10 years. Our partnership with the NRTL’s provide a solid basis for the solutions to many remediation issues. In the event there is an electrical system design issue, we have a control panel designer on our team to quickly re-design the circuits and controls, to integrate proper methods so the compliance to the standards is swift.

Costs

There are no costs to provide the estimate for the UL evaluation services unless there is a need to travel. Sometimes our estimator will need to look at the equipment before an estimate can be provided. There will be costs related to the travel, if needed. Once all the information needed is provided, an estimate can be prepared for the initial evaluation.

The costs to provide the UL evaluation services will vary based on the number of pieces that need to be evaluated, the type of equipment, and complexity of the equipment. Once we have all the information needed in hand, a quote for the initial UL evaluation will be emailed to your project engineer or facilities personnel. Upon approval of our quote, we can set a schedule for the project.
